1.4 - Windows - Custom Column View Window - Find View Items Area
The Find View Items Area is the part of the Custom Column View Window that allows you to find view items.
There are three steps to finding view items:
1) Choose a column name from the drop-down.
2) Specify all or part of the value you want to find.
3) Tell MindModel to find the view items.
The Find View Items Area has three parts, each corresponding to one of the three steps.
1) Choose a Column Name
First, choose a column name from the "Find by:" drop-down.
In the picture above, the user has chosen "Organization".
You will notice that the items in the drop-down correspond to the columns in the View Items List.
For example, if there are six columns in the View Items List: Organization, Address 1, Address 2, City, State, Zip, there will be six items in the drop-down.
If you want to find by organization name, choose "Organization". If you want to find by city, choose "City", and so on.
2) Enter the Value
Second, enter all or part of the value you want to find.
For example, if you are searching by organization name, you might enter "Acme Tech" to search for "Acme Technology Corporation".
There are a few reasons why it's usually a good idea to type part of the value, rather than the whole value.
First of all, MindModel searches for exactly the name you enter, so if the organization's name isn't exactly what you type, MindModel won't find it. For example, if you enter "Acme Technology Corporation" and the organization is stored in MindModel as "Acme Technology Corp.", MindModel will not find it.
A second reason why it's often a good idea to enter part of the value is that it can save you time spent typing. If you're looking for an organization named "Acme Technology Corporation", it would take a while to type that value into the Find View Items Entry Area.
Instead, you could just type "cme". MindModel will find organizations whose names contain "cme", in any part of the name.
The same technique works no matter what noun type you're looking for: people, organizations, skills, etc.
3) Click the Go Button
Once you've selected a column name and entered the value you're looking for, click the "Go" button to the right of the Find View Items Entry Area to begin the search. If you prefer, you can hit the return key (on the keyboard) instead of clicking the Go button.
Once you click Go (or hit return), MindModel will fill the View Items List with the items that match your selected column name and entry.
What's that black triangle to the right of the Go button?
Clicking the black triangle to the right of the Go button displays the following menu:

1) Find View Items by Custom Search
The "Find View Items by Custom Search" command allows you to find view items based on a custom search you specify by writing an XML Custom Search Template (XML CST).
For detailed instructions on how to write an XML CST, refer to the section: Key Concepts: XML Custom Search Template (XML CST).
2) Find View Items by Query
The "Find View Items by Query" command allows you to find view items based on a query.
To define a query, use the "Simple Query Window (SQW)" or the "Combined Queries Window (CQW)".
For information on the SQW, refer to the section: "Feature Guide: Windows: Simple Query Window".
For information on the CQW, refer to the section: "Feature Guide: Windows: Combined Queries Window".
