4.3 - Open Outlook Contact

Many PC users rely on Microsoft Outlook to send and receive email. With this fact in mind, we've designed MindModel to work well with Outlook.

One way to get started with MindModel is to create a new model, then use the "Import Contacts from Outlook" command in MindModel's File menu. This command imports names and contact information from all your Outlook contacts. Once the contacts are stored in MindModel, you can add statements that specify the relationships between people (who's friends with whom, who worked where, etc.).

Even after you've come to rely on MindModel for storing this sort of information, there's still a need for entering free-text notes on people. Some users prefer to keep these notes in Outlook, in the person's Outlook contact record.

MindModel's "Open Outlook Contact" feature allows you to click on a person in MindModel, and open the person's Outlook contact record. Once there, you can enter free-text notes, etc.

NOTE: The "Open Outlook Contact" feature in MindModel does not work with Outlook Express. It does work with Outlook 97, Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, Outlook XP, etc.

To use this feature of MindModel, first find the person noun whose Outlook contact record you want to open. Click here if you need to review how to do this.

Then choose "Open Outlook Contact for ..." from the Nouns Menu.

Instead of "Nancy Rankine" your menu will show the name of the person you selected.

Choose the "Open Outlook Contact for 'Your Name'" item (where 'Your Name' is the name you selected).

Outlook will open a window that looks something like this.

When you're done entering notes, just click the "Save and Close" button in this window.

Power-User Tip: You can use the "Specify Outlook Contacts Folder" command in MindModel's Tools Menu to tell MindModel which Outlook folder to user when opening Outlook contacts. If you specify a private folder, your notes will be private. If you specify a shared folder, your notes can be shared with other Outlook users on your network.

Another Power-User Tip: The "Open Outlook Contact for 'Name'" command works for organizations as well as people.
